WARMING WINTER SMOOTHIES

WARMING WINTER SMOOTHIES

Smoothie staples, like berries and melons, may be out of season, but that’s no reason to pack away your Vitamix. Fall and winter provide fresh inspiration for NYC nutritionist Jeanette Bronee. The founder of Path for Life looks more to her well-stocked pantry than the produce aisle when creating energizing fall concoctions.

These creative, warming drinks rival the deliciousness of Jean Georges’s ABC Juice Bar elixirs, and they’re packed nutritionally rich ingredients. The first smoothie is filled with antioxidants, as well as filling ingredients to power you through a long hike. The second recipe practically turns carrot juice into a spicy (virgin) cocktail.

Warming, energizing winter smoothie

Blend the following ingredients:

  • 8 ounces of “milk”—rice, hemp, oat, or almond milk

The winter spice smoothie

Blend the following ingredients:

  • 3 raw cacao beans (high in antioxidants and will give you stamina and energy on cold days)
  • ¼ of a whole star of anise
  • 1 teaspoon of chia seeds (potent source of Omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, and they expand in the stomach, keeping you full for hour
  • 1 teaspoon of bee pollen
  • 1 teaspoon of sesame seeds (black and/or white. They’re high in calcium and add creaminess)
  • 1 teaspoon organic vanilla extract (or 1/8″ of a stalk)
  • Pinch of cayenne
  • Raw honey to taste (a potent whole food, raw honey is an anti-inflammatory plus an immune system booster)
  • A whole carrot (blending, instead of juicing, preserves the fiber)
  • Dash of cayenne
  • A few whole peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon bee pollen
  • Raw honey to taste
  • About 1.5 cups of water
