5 Tips to Grow and Maintain Type 3 Natural Hair

5 Tips to Grow and Maintain Type 3 Natural Hair

Type 3 natural hair ranges from a,b to c textures. Starting with type a textures being the most loose and c being tighter curls. Many people believe that type 3 hair texture doesn’t require much maintenance or protective styling which is false. If you’ve ever wondered how to properly grow and maintain your type 3 hair, keep reading.

1. Get a Routine and Stick to it

When you fail to plan, you plan to fail. The easiest way to end up with dry, damaged, or completely unruly hair is not having a plan that works for you. Often times what may work for our natural hair comrades doesn’t work exactly the same for us. Find products that work for your hair specifically and a routine that you know you can stick to. For instance, don’t schedule wash days before work if you know you won’t have time to properly cleanse and detangle your hair. You want to be sure that your hair routine lines up with your life and what your hair needs at the time.

2. Detangle Properly

For me personally, my type 3 hair has a semi loose texture. I can easily detangle with my fingers and that is my method of choice. Finger detangling is  great for looser hair texture but you still must delicately handle your hair. Starting at the ends and slowly working your way up is key, whether you are using your fingers or a wide tooth comb.

3. Use Protective Styles

Protective styling is a great way to grow all natural hair textures. Your hair is not as greatly exposed to the elements and you are keeping moisture locked in. Braids, twists, up-dos and loose ponytails and buns are a great and stylish way to keep hair protected  and maintain the length of your hair.

4. Deep Conditioning

I’ve heard all naturals sing the praises of our Honey Miracle Deep Conditioning Hair Mask but I’ve heard it sung the loudest from type three hair types. Deep conditioning is an excellent way to maintain length and promote natural hair growth. Our deep conditioning mask has tons of slip and detangles and conditions the hair. Another great DIY conditioner is using pure coconut oil. Coconut oil also has tons of slip and penetrates the hair follicle conditioning the hair— it can either be left in the hair, or rinsed out after leaving it in for minutes, hours, or overnight.

5. Moisturize

Keeping hair moisturized is super important when it comes to hair care and growth. Since natural hair is more susceptible to breakage we need all the moisture we can get. Depending on if you have an a,b or c  texture of type 3 hair, the type of moisture you need will be different. If your hair is extremely loose and heavier products tend to weigh down your hair, our Green Tea Super Moist Leave in Conditioner  may be best for you as it is more lightweight. If your hair is on the thicker tighter curl spectrum of the 3 hair types you want a heavier product to keep your hair moisturized, our Butter Cream Daily Moisturizer   would be better for you to use as it is a heavier cream.  You can also combine these products for double the moisture!
