Recently, I was blessed with the opportunity to share my breast cancer journey with members of the Chicago business and medical community hosted by Komen Chicago. This event was held to kick off fundrasing for the Komen Ignite the Night event which will be held on October 22, 2016. For the past 9 months, I have met many black women along this path who have struggled with transportation, financial, child care, and resource issues. These factors, among many others, are part of the reason why black women are dying at a much higher rate from a disease that is fairly curable if detected early. I’m blessed and honored to help shed light on the health care disparities facing women of color, especially when it comes to this condition. Special thanks to all my friends at the Kmen Foundation for making this event happen.

Komen Chicago acknowledges that there is a large disparity between treatment and survivorship. Since 2011, breast cancer mortality is 40% higher in African-American women compared to Caucasian women. Also, African-American women and Latinas are more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer than Caucasian women. The goal of their campaign is to eliminate these disparities and increase awareness of early detection and mammograms among women of color.

I am honored and humbled to be named a Komen Chicago Hero. Many women do not have access to the same care I received and my hope is to help change that.
