Many women and men suffer from dry locs. Dry locs can break, have a dull appearance, feel brittle, and are not mistaken for naturally dry hair. Some hair has a natural dry look to it; this does not mean that your hair is suffering from dryness. Dry locs are prone to excessive breakage and splitting. Here are 8 tips that will keep your dry locs soft, supple, and moisturized.
1. Avoid Excessive Products
When our hair is dry, we believe that adding more product will do the trick. So we add product on top of product to our hair until we feel it is adequately coated. Too many products only dry out the hair and weigh it down, creating buildup! Instead, stick with a few staple products, such as a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner and a leave-in oil.
2. Find Your Staple Products
Having staple products that you can use on your hair regularly is extremely important when it comes to caring for your locs. Our Moisture Rich Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Triple Moisture Replenishing Conditioner gently cleanse locs and restore moisture.
3. Drink Water
Drinking water is by far one of the best things you can do for your overall appearance and health. Drinking water helps keep skin and hair hydrated from within. Hair is made up of 5% water and 95% protein. In addition to keeping hair quenched, water also helps increase hair growth.
5. Eat Plenty of Protein
Because hair is made up of 95% protein, it is important to keep protein in your body! The loss of internal protein can make hair dry, brittle, and susceptible to breakage and hair loss. Foods such as salmon, kidney beans, black beans, and chickpeas contain plenty of protein! You can also do monthly protein treatments to help add moisture back into the hair.
6. Avoid Excess Heat Styling
Some loc ladies still use heat styling tools such as curling wands and flat irons to add versatility to their look, believing it will be less damaging because their hair is in locs. However, heat styling is still damaging to natural hair in general and causes excessive dryness, heat damage, and breakage. Opt for rollers, twist-outs, braid-outs, and other non-heat styles to achieve similar looks.
7. Sleep with a Satin Bonnet or Pillowcase at Night
Sleeping with a satin pillowcase or bonnet will help hair retain moisture that can sometimes be lost when tossing and turning on a cotton pillowcase. If your locs are long, put your hair in a loose top bun, and then apply your bonnet.
8. Clarify
Combining apple cider vinegar and baking soda makes one amazing clarifying wash! We have a few clarifying treatments that help remove excessive product buildup that can overdry your lovely locs. If you experience excessive buildup, try doing a clarifying cleanse at least once a month. Your hair will love it and feel much cleaner and softer after!
