After almost twenty years, Essence Magazine is once again completely black owned! The change came after being sold by parent company Time Inc. The magazine and lifestyle brand has been acquired by Richelieu Dennis who is also the founder of SheaMoisture.
Though Dennis has yet to discuss the details of the sale he is adamant that the purchase was made to serve and empower women of color.
“This will give Essence a platform and a voice to serve its consumers, which are women of color,” Stated Mr. Dennis.
Also excited about the change is Essence president, Michelle Ebanks.
“This acquisition of [Essence] represents the beginning of an exciting transformation of our iconic brand,” stated Michelle Ebanks, who will remain on board in wake of the transition.
We look forward to continue supporting the brand as they have supported us over the course of our journey.
