Sealing Your Ends 101

Ladies, we’re always going to have haters in life. That hater can be a co-worker, a neighbor, your man’s ex-girlfriend (umm, but that’s a different story for a different time). Either way, you’re going to have to learn how to nip the hater in the butt. Our hair is no exception. No matter how much time, attention, love and care we might give it, the evil hair spirits will try to rain on your hair parade with all kinds of negativity. One of the biggest culprits is the infamous split end. (Side eye) Naturalista, when I tell you split ends just sneak up on you like an unexpected bill! They come out of no where and they just mess everything up. Everything! But don’t worry ladies! We got you covered. The best way to prevent split ends is by sealing them. Sealing them? Yes, sealing them. When you seal your ends, what you’re doing is locking moisture inside your hair so it can’t escape. Now, if your ends are already split, sealing them won’t work. You’ll have to cut off the split ends and start from scratch. Okay, to seal your ends all you need to do is coat your ends with your favorite hair oil or hair butter. Now you can go extra old school and use castor oil if you want, or you can be a little new age and use either a coconut hair oil or a shea butter. It’s your choice, just remember to use an oil or butter that works with your hair type. For added moisture, I like to mist my hair (and/or ends) with water and then seal with oil. If your hair is kind of long, you might want to twist or braid your hair and then coat the ends. Do this three or four nights a week, and when you’re done, don’t forget to wear your silk scarf to bed. Then voila! You’re officially on the right path to healthy hair. And there you have it. I know there are a lot of terms that are thrown around when it comes to transitioning or going natural, and at times, it can be confusing.
