Crazy shifts in weather, can mean crazy shifts in hair! You may have to adjust your hair regimen a bit to accommodate harsher weather — coming at full speed around the corner. Here are a handful of tips to keep in mind this Fall to avoid the dryness and breakage that might come with being under-prepared!

Adjust Wash Time

For most of us, shifting seasons can mean extra dryness. This means a constant battle to keep your hair hydrated and to keep hair from breaking off. While natural hair loves water — it does not love heat. If you are someone who uses high heat on your hair after each wash, start extending your wash periods. If you normally wash and blow dry once a week, try every week and a half or every two weeks. If you are someone who air dries — the opposite applies. Take the time to wash and air dry your hair more frequently to ensure your hair is getting all the moisture it can get! For a gentle wash, we love TGIN Sulfate Free Shampoo. For a deep condition, our TGIN Honey Miracle Hair Mask is the rave.

Curly Wigs

Curly + textured wigs, half wigs, and hair pieces allow you to experiment with loose hair styles while still giving your hair a rest. It’s always difficult to find an (affordable…) wig to match your exact texture. But if you keep on the look out for deals and keep searching, you’ll be sure to find something that works for you. Heatless Stretching Methods

While it’s tempting to reach for your blow dryer + concentrator nozzle for tension blow drying and stretching your hair, limiting the use of heat to once a week or less will do your hair some good. Instead, twist your hair and stretch your twists using bobby pins while they dry or set. For a more blown out look, use the African threading method. Check out our top no-heat styling tools, including African threading string, here.

Dust Your Ends

If you are patiently growing out your mane, yes, we know it’s hard to face up to a trim. But you have to. We are not talking inches, we are just talking a quarter or half of an inch. Just when your hair — and the weather — starts acting really crazy. You will find styling much more manageable and you will barely notice any difference in length.

Moisturize Your Ends

While we don’t recommend piling on product over and over again through out the week — it is a good idea to reapply moisture and sealant to your ends. If you are going to re-moisturize your hair throughout the week, apply product only on your ends to provide extra protection against breakage and split ends and to avoid buildup. You’ll find your hair healthier and wash-time easier.
