Businesswoman daydreaming

There are many myths out there involving natural hair and most of them have been passed down from earlier generations and spoken of so frequently and with such conviction tons of people believe them to be true! These myths however couldn’t be further from the truth. Here are 5 natural hair myths debunked!

1. Dirty Hair Grows Faster

Bad hair day

Children whispered this on the playgrounds, grandmothers said it, and even some beauticians believed it! Dirty hair absolutely does not grow faster than clean hair. In fact a dirty greasy scalp can actually make it difficult for hair to make it’s way out of the scalp. The truth to this myth is that natural hair doesn’t need to be washed as frequently as straight hair due to the fact that it takes longer for natural oils our hair needs to travel down the scalp of naturally curly hair. However, natural hair loves water and benefits greatly from it.

2.Split Ends Stop Hair Growth

False, false, and false again. Hair does not grow from the ends it grows from the scalp. What is going on at the bottom of your hair has nothing to do with how your hair is growing from the scalp of your head. If your hair is breaking or splitting at the rate it is growing however, that could cause your hair to appear as if it is not growing at all. Get your ends trimmed as needed to avoid this from happening.

3. Certain Hair Types Simply Don’t Grow

We have all heard a woman complaining about how her hair simply doesn’t grow, or how her specific hair texture can’t grow past a certain length. Unless you have a medical condition that causes hair loss, or slows down hair growth, every texture of hair grows around the same amount. The issue that is tighter hair textures are more susceptible to breakage than their looser texture counterparts.Shrinkage can also cause tighter hair textures to look much shorter than their true length. If you feel your hair is never growing past a certain length, reevaluate your hair routine and see if it is something that you could be actually doing that is causing the problem.

4. Your Scalp Needs to Be Greased

Do You Really Need To Grease Your Scalp

You don’t need to grease your scalp to keep it moisturized or for your hair to grow. Our scalp produces natural oils that keep it well moisturized. If you notice your scalp is excessively dry, you could be using products that have sulfates in them and are too drying. Use tgins Moisture Rich Sulfate Free Shampoo and Triple Moisture Replenishing Conditioner, to ensure you aren’t drying your scalp out. Switch to natural oils like almond, or apricot if you absolutely feel the need to add moisture to your scalp.

5. Water Isn’t Good For Your Hair

Natural hair loves water! It literally soaks it up like a sponge. When you drink more water you notice hair growth, stronger nails and skin! Water is amazing at moisturizing hair, as a styling aid, helping to detangle hair and works well with products! Using water on your natural hair will in no way damage or hurt it.
